The final version of new Geological Map of Gondwana will be an evolution of a series of drafts that were produced during this 8 year-project. These drafts are constantly updated at this website with the information about their new features, release/publication date, meeting where they were presented and other relevant descriptions. The maps are exclusively produced at the GDCG by the Gondwana team at UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
The most recent version of the map is available for download in low quality until the official release in October 2018, where the high quality version will become available.
Gondwana Geological Map – Pre-1st Edition
Published: November/2017
The Pre-1st Edition of the Gondwana Geological Map was presented at the Gondwana 16th Congress in Bangkok (Thailand). It was constructed after Geographic Coordinate System – datum WGS 84. The geological lineaments represent major crustal scale structures classified kinematically, not chronologically. The tectonic events represented by most of the metamorphic units were updated to provide more geodynamic aspects to the map. It introduces the trace of the La Ventana-Cape Fold Belt orogenic front according to offshore data (Pangaro & Ramos, 2012). Some portions display overlapping areas (e.g. Arabic Peninsula and northern Africa; Madagascar and Mozambique). Following suggestions from the SCAR meeting at EGU in April 2017, Antarctica is presented with sub-ice topographic data, which might aid with the interpretation of the main sutures that are below the ice cap. The reconstruction used for this version is a hybrid model using different author’s proposals for the Gondwana fragments.
GONDWANA GEOLOGICAL MAP – DRAFT 2.0
Published: 20 August/2016
This draft was presented at the 35th International Geological Congress in Cape Town (South Africa) and further at the 48th Brazilian Geological Congress in Porto Alegre (Brazil). The geographic coordinate system is datum WGS-84. The polygons are classified in accordance with age and type of rock. Colors represent formation ages of the geological units according to the Geological Time Scale of IUGS, adapted by the Gondwana Project. The texture represents basic lithological groups. In the case of igneous rocks, their pattern also represents the chemical group (acid/intermediate/basic/ultrabasic/alkaline). The color of the texture in the metamorphic units represent the age of the major/last tectonic event. The geological lineaments implemented represent major crustal scale structures, still not classified. The reconstruction was built using G-Plates, but the reconstruction of the Gondwana fragments was modified according to several authors, listed in the draft. The configuration is for 183 Ma.
GONDWANA GEOLOGICAL MAP – DRAFT 1.3
Published: 22-26 June/2015
This draft was presented at the Rio Gondwana Workshop. It is constructed after polyconic projection. The polygons are classified according to the age and type of rock. Colors represent formation ages of the geological units according to the Geological Time Scale of IUGS. The pattern represents basic lithological groups. The reconstruction was built using G-Plates and it displays its configuration at 150 Ma (Seton et al., 2012).
GONDWANA GEOLOGICAL MAP – DRAFT 1.2
Published: 14-18 July/2014
This draft was presented at the Gondwana 15 – North meets South, in Madrid (Spain). It is constructed after polyconic projection. The polygons are classified in accordance with age and type of rock. Colors represent formation ages of the geological units according to the Geological Time Scale of IUGS. The pattern represents basic lithological groups. The reconstruction was built using G-Plates and it displays its configuration at 150 Ma (Seton et al., 2012). It is only an approximation and the second draft of what would be the new Gondwana Map. The country of Brazil was compiled from Bizzi et al. (2003) in a different scale (1:1M) that needs to be simplified.
GONDWANA GEOLOGICAL MAP – DRAFT 1.0
Published: February/2014
This draft was presented at the CGMW meeting at UNESCO (Paris, France). It is constructed after polyconic projection. The polygons are classified in accordance with age and type of rock. Colors represent formation ages of the geological units according to the Geological Time Scale of IUGS. The pattern represents basic lithological groups. The reconstruction was built using G-Plates to display a configuration at 150 Ma (Seton et al., 2012). It is only an approximation and first draft of what would be the new Gondwana Map.
GONDWANA GEOLOGICAL MAP – PRE-DRAFT
Published: 25-27 November/2013
This pre-draft was presented at Geosur/2013 – International Geological Congress on the Southern Hemisphere – Viña del Mar (Chile). It is constructed after polar stereographic projection. The polygons are classified by different colors according to the Geological Time Scale of IUGS in accordance with the formation age of the geological units. The texture represents basic lithological groups. The reconstruction was built according to the configuration at 150 Ma (Seton et al., 2012), but modified based in Leinweber & Jokat (2012), Nürnberg & Müller (1991) and Moulin et al. (2010).
GONDWANA GEOLOGICAL MAP – PRE-DRAFT – DE WIT´S
Published: 25-30 September/2011
This pre-draft was presented at Gondwana 14 – Reuniting Gondwana: the East meets the West -Búzios (Brazil). It is the reconstruction of Gondwana at 150Ma, with a digital compilation based on the geological data of De Wit´s et al map of 1988.
